I was lucky enough to collaborate on this amazing project for the new Tomb Raider game that was just recently released! We had a critique in class today on an assignment focusing around genuine, sincere love. A student of mine illustrated a nice image of a family who lived in a shoe. Everything looked wonderful; great composition, lovely values…but there was one thing that irked me. The grandmother. She was leaning out of the window with a tray of cookies, seemingly innocent, but something was off. My first comment was the lighting. Her face was in shadow, so adding more light to her complexion would allow her to seem less intimidating. But that wasn’t all. Looking more closely her expression too seemed off, and suddenly the tray of cookies was no longer a welcoming sight. At once I was afraid for the family in the image. Needless to say I expressed my concerns to her, and asked that she work on the grandmother’s expression so she did not come off as an ax murderer. 

Well, later today I received an email from her, she had a link to the fixed image. “Wonderful!” I thought to myself, my fears would be eased. 

NOT EVEN AT ALL.

Needless to say I was tearing up with laughter, while also contemplating the nightmare potential of this new level of evil. Of course, cropping the grandmother out while now providing her with satanic glowing eyeballs has made the effect of uneasiness even worse. What is in those cookies? Why is the baby hanging onto the shoe for dear life? Is he escaping? Also, I begin to wonder exactly why her other arm is propped in a very “I will stab you with this hidden knife” fashion.

I emailed her back, clearly taking this as a joke, and asked her permission to post it on the blog. She responded with the “OK” and nonchalantly linked me to the real, updated version of her grandmother. Happily, I clicked:

Looking closely at the now normal eyes, I start to think “you know, up close she actually looks like a really nice - HOLY JEEZUS GOOD GOD”

My students actively try to give me nightmares.

It has just come to my attention that this website has stolen my design, along with MANY others that were posted on the Society6 website for sale. If you see any other artists on here you know, please inform them of the theft!

Update: The current domain has shut its doors and the company is in the process of rerouting its domain. I’ve seen at least one other (separate) domain name from the same company go up (and back down again). Essentially, this website is down but another one will exist in the near future.

I’m going to take this as an opportunity to stress just how much I hate knockoff brands, designs, and the companies who specialize in them. I don’t care if you knocked off something tangible like furniture or jewelry, or if its the art which comes on an Iphone case. Someone worked their ass off to bring that into existence, and to exploit that hard work is wrong on every level.

Shame on you, exploiters. I hope someone slaps you in the face with leeches.

Not as many designs, but some still clearly look stolen. I’ll be keeping my eye on this company in the coming weeks. How irritating.

Lord of Potatoes, Ruler of Rubs.

This is my dog Jack. Hes a Potato shaped Papillon, and cannot survive more than 15 minutes with a pat, rub, or scratching from one of my family members. He follows me like a shadow, which I take as solid proof that I give the best rubs out of everyone (or that I always potentially have food close by, which may or may not be the case). Hes basically the cutest, fuzziest, silliest dog I’ve ever met, and I would be very distraught without him around.
